Širom (Slovenia)

"Regionally specific but also universal."
The Guardian

The intertwining of diverse musical approaches and tools, histories of sounds and unbridled musical imagination and craftsmanship is the expansive guiding principle of the Širom trio, whose members stem from the regions of Prekmurje, Tolminsko and Kras. More than a dozen instruments can be found in the repertoire of Iztok Koren, Samo Kutin and Ana Kravanja and at least as many given musical forms that can be perceived as an inspiration behind the character of this new ensemble. However, in their practice as well as experience they remain anchored in their creative process to an extent that allows them to avoid merely reflecting existing patterns. What this generates in an original, stylistically homogeneous form of expression that oscillates between a wide array of folk sounds and contemporary acoustic rock-style meditations. The end result is grounded yet still mystical minimalism. Širom’s music is contemplative, but can get harder when necessary, it is closer to being band- than chamber-like, to being street as opposed to urban in nature. Each member of Širom also performs in a myriad of other bands and music projects, such as ŠKM banda, Hexenbrutal, Najoua, Samo Gromofon, and Horda grdih.

Crimi (France)

"Beautiful perspectives from the Sicilian diaspora. Autochthonous sounds, melodies, and sentiment that is both outward and in-looking."

Crimi is a matter of trickling soul, a certain notion of the oozing groove, like the porous raï creations derived from all influences or the catchy funk of New Orleans, while maintaining important tones of a more melancholic style. Crimi is above all a personal story, of a kid raised in Lyon whose Sicilian grandmother hummed time-honoured songs. This theme is a key element in the formula that saxophonist and singer Julien Lesuisse likes to call the soul of Sicily. This explains why it is possible to hear oriental tones, a lyricism at the height of the voice reflecting his time in Oran with Mazalda. Crimi is also a desire to revive traditional aspects running through original songs, well-crafted melodies carried by the sound of the band, of an unlabelled genre. This traditional-modern band is at the same time very structured and very free. Luci e guai is Crimi’s debut album released by Airfono Records in March 2021. 'Light and muddles', this title has programmatic value and it suggests that nothing is ever as simple as it seems, in words as in music. In other words, the perfect framework in which to connect all the threads that weave the complexity of a personality, from jazz to ballad, from the day before yesterday to tomorrow, from here and elsewhere.
